Website or Blog?

12 February 2009 1,259 views One Comment

When I first started this website, it was just that, a website. But as time went on and I found that updating the site was taking way too much of my time, I looked into changing the format to a blog style.

Today, there are plenty of WordPress Themes that look less like blogs and more like websites. If you are just starting out a website, or are tired of updating your old site, try a blog instead.

First, the best advice I can give you is to get your own domain. Host Gator provides reasonable hosting fees for your website (or blog). I will be posting an article soon on how to obtain your own domain name.

Second, choose an appropriate theme. I choose the Arthemia theme because it is a magazine style theme and it has lots of different options. A magazine or news style theme is good for a website, as is a photography type theme if you have products to promote. There are tons of free themes, but consider paying about $79 for a good theme with support.

Third, before you start blogging, take time to think of how your site will be organized. I found with my site that five main categories was all that I needed. Too many categories can just confuse the reader. Instead have subcategories as well.

Fourth, don’t be afraid to make the necessary changes if you don’t think the theme or organization is working out. It is very easy with WordPress to try and new themes and see how you like them.

Fifth, if you really don’t have any idea where to begin, try a professionals help. I have helped a number of clients install their blogs.
